Printers for nail-care planner PDFs

Start with the pages you will print
The free Nail and Foot-Care Visit Kit is a 24-page PDF in US Letter (8.5 by 11 inches) or A4. The three quick-start files are Letter size: the seven-day planner is five pages, and the Appointment Question Card and the Care Instruction Capture Template are two pages each, nine pages in all. Most people print only a few pages at a time. That is a small job, so buying a printer is rarely the first step.
Document and paper fit
Letter size, actual-size printing and the paper weights you plan to use. The visit kit also comes as an A4 PDF.
Connection and setup
How you will send a file from the device you already use.
Supplies and upkeep
Ink or toner, stated page yields and any maintenance parts.
Your existing printer may be enough.
Need A4 or large print?
The visit pack builder, part of the free visit kit, prints the same kind of blank pages in true A4 or US Letter, in standard or large print, so you do not have to rescale a Letter file.

Try the printer you can already use
First, test a printer you can already reach.
Open the PDF and choose your paper size.
Use the PDF reader or browser you normally use, and set the paper size to Letter, or to A4 if you print the A4 kit.
Pick actual size or 100% scale.
If your print settings offer “fit” or “shrink” options, choose actual size instead so the boxes keep their shape.
Check the preview, then print one page.
Look for cut-off edges. Write one line on the test page with your usual pen.
Use the printer’s own instructions if something is wrong.
The manual or the maker’s support page is the right source for paper jams, driver settings and error lights.
File Access Help walks through actual-size printing in more detail and covers opening and saving the files.
Occasional outside printing
If you have no printer, printing a few blank pages elsewhere may cost less than owning one. Options may include a public library, a print and copy shop, or a workplace printer you are allowed to use. Ask about the price per page, Letter paper and how to send the file.
Print the blank templates outside the home and fill them in by hand later. Do not leave completed notes in a shared print queue, download folder or email account on a shared computer.
Compare printer formats
These are types of printer, not products. No models have been chosen, tested or ranked.
Cartridge inkjet
- May suit: occasional pages, including color.
- Benefit: ink comes in replaceable cartridges.
- Trade-off: cartridge cost per page needs checking.
- Check: cartridge types, stated yields and connection support.
Tank inkjet
- May suit: people who print more often and prefer to refill.
- Benefit: ink tanks you refill from bottles.
- Trade-off: refilling takes care and some setup time.
- Check: bottle availability, stated yields and maintenance steps.
Black-and-white laser
- May suit: black-and-white pages only.
- Benefit: toner instead of liquid ink.
- Trade-off: no color output; toner and drum parts to replace.
- Check: toner and drum details and supported paper weights.
Count the ongoing costs
The printer’s price is only part of what you pay. Supplies, replacement parts, paper, delivery and taxes all add up.
- Cost per page: divide the price of a supply by its stated page yield. Check what test the maker says the yield is based on and whether it covers black only or color.
- Paper: add your cost per usable sheet. Our planner paper guide shows how to work it out.
- Duplex (two-sided printing): it can save sheets. Check whether the printer turns pages automatically or asks you to flip them. Print a two-sided test first, because writing that shows through can make both sides harder to read.
- Subscriptions or required accounts: note any recurring charge or sign-in the setup requires.
One set of quick-start files (9 pages) plus one new seven-day notes page each week for 11 more weeks = 20 pages in 12 weeks.
Arithmetic only. At a volume like this, compare outside printing with buying before you decide.
